It’s easy to discover recent news of Santana’s band. But few know the story of what brought the band together.
It all began in 1966 when Carlos Santana left Mexico for San Francisco. There he discovered the hippie and counterculture movements and found himself wanting to be part of the exciting new wave. So later that year he began assembling his own band.
After finding his lineup, the band was granted an audition spot for concert promoter Bill Graham at the Fillmore Auditorium on a bill with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and the Charles Lloyd Quartet, and named themselves the Santana Blues Band. Within a month, the group had some further lineup additions that spelled great things for the group, but they were fired, after the band stalled due to Carlos Santana’s hospitalization.
Around this time, the band shortened their name to Santana..Afterwhich they secured a record deal with Columbia Records after a successful audition to open for The Grateful Dead. At this time, Santa performed a series of concerts at the Fillmore that were recorded for a proposed live album.
Biographer Silmon Leng said this period marked Santana’s move away from blues and R&B towards what would be known as the “Santana Sound’ with the addition of Afro-Cuban and Jazz numbers to their sets. And this led to the band stabilizing in 1969 with the lineup that would make it famous.

Today, Santana is a band that has won numerous awards for their sound and style. This includes eight Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards. The band has also had two albums inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and a song indicuted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame.
